Earlier information:
Registration has closed for the random drawing for tickets to Michael Jackson's memorial and tribute at the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday.
As of earlier on Saturday, more than 1.2 million people have registered for a lottery for 17,500 free tickets for Tuesday's memorial service for Michael Jackson at Staples Center, according to a Jackson family spokesman.
As of 9 a.m., 1,223,978 requests for tickets was received by the
staplescenter.com Web site, said family spokesman Ken Sunshine.
As of 9 p.m. Friday, the Web site had received 4,225,720 hits, he said.
Fans have until 6 p.m. Saturday to apply online for the 11,000 tickets for Staples Center and the 6,500 tickets for the next-door Nokia Theatre, where the memorial will be simulcast on big screens.
A computer program will randomly select 8,750 names to receive two tickets for one venue or the other, AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke said earlier.
So far, the lineup for the memorial service has not been announced.
Those chosen for tickets will be notified between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday and be given a code to use at the Ticketmaster.com Web site, which will give them more instructions on where to go Monday to get the tickets and wristbands, Leiweke said.
Some 1,400 Los Angeles police have been assigned to crowd control downtown, because even though no one without a ticket will be allowed near the venues, hundreds of thousands of fans are expected to show up anyway.
The service will not be carried on the video screens outside the venues, but many networks will broadcast it live, and police and city officials urged those without tickets to stay home and watch the service on TV.
