Los Angeles - A day after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, Conrad Murray's legal woes continued Tuesday as he faced a civil wrongful death lawsuit filed by the King of Pop's father.
Murray remains in Los Angeles County Jail after Judge Michael E. Pastor ordered that he was remanded in custody Monday until his sentencing on Nov. 29. The Los Angeles Times reported that Murray was placed on suicide watch shortly after arriving at the jail.
The end of the criminal trial has cleared the way for the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Joe Jackson in November 2010 to proceed. Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against AEG Live, the corporation that was to run Jackson's "This Is It" tour before his sudden death on June 25, 2009.
According to ABC News, the lawsuits are likely to be combined, with lawyers expected to allege that AEG Live knew about Murray's use of the anesthetic propofol on Jackson in his rented Los Angeles mansion.
Murray was found guilty Monday for criminally negligently administering propofol on Jackson. Under California law, the verdict can be used as conclusive evidence that Murray is civilly liable for Jackson's death.
In the wrongful death lawsuit, Jackson's family must only prove Murray and AEG were responsible for Jackson's death by a preponderance of the evidence, which is a lower standard than the reasonable doubt barometer Murray faced in his criminal trial.
However, ABC News reported that even if found civilly liable, Murray is unlikely to incur many costs because AEG's considerable financial heft would pay any damages in a judgment against the pair.
Murray faces up to four years in prison from his involuntary manslaughter conviction but may avoid substantial jail time as overcrowding has drastically reduced the prison time given to non-violent criminals in California's state jails.
