Apple, Samsung Smartphones Outdo Nokia in 2Q

New York - A research firm says Apple and Samsung zoomed to the top of the list of global smartphone makers in the second quarter, blowing past Nokia and Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry.

Samsung Electronics of Korea made the biggest jump, from No. 4 in the first quarter to No. 2 in the second. That's according to the tally by analysts at IDC.

Apple Inc. rose to No. 1 by selling 20.3 million iPhones, relegating the long-time biggest smartphone maker, Nokia Corp., to third place.

RIM fell from third to fourth place, as it saw a decline in BlackBerry sales from the first quarter to the second. It's been struggling to update the high end of its line to compete with touch-screen phones such as the iPhone.
