(MYFOX NATIONAL) - There will be a total solar eclipse on Wednesday, and some are fearing it could trigger violence and turmoil across the world.
The eclipse will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern India, eastern Nepal, northern Bangladesh, Bhutan, the northern tip of Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean, including the Ryukyu Islands, Marshall Islands and Kiribati. It will be the longest eclipse of the 21st century, lasting as much as 6 minutes, 39 seconds in parts of the south Pacific Ocean.
Solar eclipses have been observed throughout history, and the superstitious and religious view them as a sign of potential doom . Ancient eclipse records made in China and Babylonia are believed to be over 4,000 years old, and there is evidence that the ancient Egyptians observed solar eclipses over 4,500 years ago.
The ancient Chinese believed that solar eclipses occur when a legendary celestial dragon devours the Sun. Hindu Mythology also believes the sun gets eaten during a solar eclipse.
In India, many Hindus won't eat because they believe food becomes impure without the sun light as the number of germs increase. Expectant mothers don't want to have their babies on the day of an eclipse, and it is believed that unborn babies could develop birth defects if the mothers are outside during the event.
"This is a belief deeply rooted in Indian society. Couples are willing to do anything to ensure that the baby is not born on that day," Shivani Sachdev Gour, a gynecologist at the Fortis Hospital in New Delhi, told AFP .
Indian astrologers are predicting possible natural disasters and a rise in violence following the eclipse. Some even think it could lead to U.S. military action in Iran.
"The last 200 years, whenever Saturn has gone into Virgo there has been either a world war or a mini world war," Mumbai astrologer Raj Kumar Sharma explained.
Scientists are trying to downplay the event, telling people there is nothing to be alarmed about and that it is just a natural phenomenon.
Travel firm Cox and Kings has chartered a Boeing 737-700 aircraft to give people the chance to get a great view of the eclipse from the air. The flight will have experts on board to explain everything to the passengers.
