If you need to recover information from a malfunctioning hard drive, experts say there are a few things you should consider:
 

• The length of time they have been in the data recovery business.
• Do they do regular work for established companies -- and provide letters of recommendation.
• Will they provide referrals from satisfied customers with who you can speak?
• Can they explain the problem and possible fix in clear, layman's terms you can understand.
