The blaze, which was reported at 3:47 p.m., is burning near the Marshall Canyon Golf Course and Live Oak Canyon near La Verne, said Capt. Mike Brown of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
"We believe the fire is suspicious in nature, possible arson," said Sgt. Richard Ramirez of the nearby San Dimas sheriff's station. "Investigators are at the scene now to determine if that is the case, or if the fire was accidental."
Firefighters stopped the blaze from spreading to three nearby homes, Brown said.
Firefighters were expected to work "through the night and well into tomorrow morning," he said.
As a precaution, the golf course had been under a voluntary evacuation prior to closing for the day.
No injuries have been reported.
