Mira Loma (myFOXla.com) - A Mira Loma homeowner struggled with a 24-year-old Costa Mesa man during an attempted home-invasion robbery, causing the intruder to drop a weapon that was then used to kill him, a sheriff's investigator said today.

The attempted robbery occurred about 8:10 a.m. Sunday in the 3100 block of Chardoney Way, near the San Bernardino County border, said Juan Zamora of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect and a female companion were trying to rob the homeowners, but the residents fought them, and when the male dropped his firearm, one of the residents picked it up and fatally shot him, Zamora said.

The suspect attempted to flee but collapsed in front of the home and died, Zamora said. The status of the female suspect was not immediately released.
