Los Angeles (myFOXla.com) - A former soldier was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the Culver City murder of his girlfriend and her unborn child.
The former Army National Guard Staff Sargeant -- with teary red eyes -- turned to look at his wife as she told the court about him being a good husband and father. She pleaded for the court's mercy.
Flora Ansman/Wife:
"I am asking you to give my husband a second chance."
She said she'd forgiven him... and there's a lot to forgive.
36-year-old Scott Ansman had sex with a National Guard recruit.
She was 29-year old JoAnn Harris. Harris was six-months pregnant when Ansman murdered her on the floor of a Culver City National Guard armory in August 2007.
A bat and a knife were recovered by investigators at the scene. Harris also may have been stabbed, the coroner's office said.
Joe Markus/Deputy DA:
"Beaten in the head with a baseball bat approximately 6 times
across a gymnasium floor."
Markus said it was Ansman's plan to hide the fact that he got her pregnant.
Harris' niece, Dechelle RIchardson, spoke at the sentencing.
Dechelle Richardson/Victim's Niece:
"It's just evil. It's not color. It's not race. It's just
pure evil."
An unrepentant Ansman called the jury guilty verdict a "farce" in court.
Scott Ansman/Convicted Killer:
"I felt like I was at the Salem witch trials -- burn him at
the stake before you find out the truth."
At the sentencing, the judge told Ansman, "You didn't -- to my knowledge -- never expressed one wit of remorse for the bloody murder of JoAnn Harris, and her unborn child."
Ansman -- the father of 3 young children -- got life in prison without the possibility of parole.
DNA tests now show he wasn't even the father of JoAnn Harris' unborn child in the first place.
