Rancho Palos Verdes (myFOXla.com) - Small patrols of firefighters remained in Rancho Palos Verdes
today to monitor possible flare-ups, but officials said the
wildfire that damaged six homes and prompted the evacuation of more
than 1,000 people was 100 percent contained at noon today.
The blaze scorched about 235 acres and destroyed a gazebo and
a shed.
The fire broke out shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday around
Ocean Trails and Palos Verdes drives. Within hours, it threatened
hundreds of homes in the nearby Rolling Hills area, prompting
evacuation orders. Residents were allowed to return home later that
morning.
Nearly still winds aided firefighters late Friday and
defensible fire lines surrounded the flames by about midnight, a
Los Angeles County Fire dispatcher said. The fire was 100 percent
contained as of 12:50 p.m.
At the height of the fire, hundreds of firefighters from the
Los Angeles County and city fire departments, Long Beach, Compton,
Torrance, Redondo, Downey, Compton and Vernon were assigned to the
blaze. Five helicopters worked the blaze, some making drops after
dark.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
