Reseda (myFOXla.com) - A 23-year-old man was charged today with murdering his mother, a Kennedy High School teacher whose body was found in the Reseda apartment where the two lived.

Saida Munguia -- who had been stabbed several times -- was discovered dead Monday afternoon by relatives inside the apartment in the 7600 block of Reseda Boulevard. The 40-year-old victim had been stabbed several times.

Bryan Julius Garcia-Munguia was arrested outside a Denny's restaurant at the corner of Reseda Boulevard and Saticoy Street in Reseda about 11:20 p.m. Monday, Los Angeles police Detective Joel Price said.

Family members who had just finished eating at the restaurant were gathered in the parking lot when he unexpectedly showed up, prompting them to call police, Price said.

Garcia-Munguia briefly struggled with his uncle, who eventually "put the mitts on him" before arriving officers took him into custody, the detective said.

The victim's family and neighbors reported that "there's been a rather rocky relationship between mother and child, in particular during the last week," Price said earlier this week.

Garcia-Munguia, who pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, remains jailed on $1 million bail. He is due back in Van Nuys Superior Court on June 18 and faces up to 16 years to life in state prison if convicted, according to the District Attorney's Office.
