Palmdale - A 17-year-old father who fatally stabbed his 5-month-old son today was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies in Palmdale, authorities said.
The sheriff's department received a report at 11 a.m. that the 5-month-old was abducted, Capt. Mike Parker of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.
Deputies were told that the father kidnapped his son from a person who was taking care of the baby and drove away, Parker said.
An Amber Alert was issued as deputies began to investigate the kidnapping, and learned that the father had phoned the baby's mother and threatened to harm their son.
Deputies spotted the father's sport utility vehicle about 3:35 p.m. and began to follow him.
"The deputies saw the suspect motion in a manner that appeared as though he was stabbing the baby as he drove his car," Parker said.
"Attempting to get him to stop, deputies went in pursuit of the suspect's vehicle. After about two to three minutes, the suspect was involved in a single-vehicle collision, striking a building."
Deputies chased the father on foot and saw him trying to break into the home of a family he didn't know and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
A second shooting then occurred inside the home. The suspect died but no deputies were injured.
Other deputies ran to the vehicle, picked up the 5-month-old and raced him to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead there.
