Lawndale (myFOXla.com) - A deputy was wounded and an armed man was shot to death during a confrontation in Lawndale, authorities said.
The violence occurred about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at 166th Street and Prairie Avenue, said Deputy Byron Ward of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.
The deputy, wounded in the shoulder, was treated at a hospital and released, authorities said.
Deputies had responded to a call from a woman who reported her son was "agitated and that he had a gun,".
"When they arrived, the suspect was not at the location; he had left," sheriff's Sgt. David Infante told reporters. "So (they) searched the area, and they located him. Shortly thereafter ... he produced a handgun, which led to a deputy-involved shooting."
Ward said the suspect was hit by gunfire from the deputy and died at the scene. Authorities withheld the name of the dead man, who was in his 20s, pending notification of his relatives.
