Los Angeles (myFOXla.com) - Nearly 6,000 taxpayers in Los Angeles and Orange counties are being sought by the Internal Revenue Service, to give them money, the agency announced on Monday.
Refund checks worth a total of $6.5 million have been returned as undeliverable because of incorrect addresses in the two counties, according to the IRS. That works out to an average of $1,085 per taxpayer.
"We are eager to get this money into the hands of taxpayers, so don't delay if you think you are missing a refund," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.
Nationally, the IRS is looking for 107,831 taxpayers owed a combined $124 million.
Taxpayers can update their addresses using the "Where's My Refund?" tool on the IRS Web site, www.irs.gov . They can also call (800) 829-1954.
The agency encouraged people to file electronically and choose direct deposit for refunds to reduce the problem of lost and stolen checks.
