Long Beach - UPDATE (Tuesday, 11/10) - Kaya, the dog that jumped from a burning third floor apartment in Long Beach on Monday morning, had to be put to sleep on Tuesday despite efforts to save her life.
Kaya had broken her spine in the fall, and veterinary specialists said the injury was so severe that there was nothing they could do to save her.
Earlier Information:
Firefighters saved the life of one dog locked in a burning apartment where no one else was at home on Monday, but another dog which jumped from a third story window to the ground to escape the flames was in serious condition.
Firefighters were called to 445 E. 3rd St. at 7:46 a.m., said Battalion Chief Frank Hayes of the Long Beach Fire Department.
Firefighters were on scene within three minutes of the original call and black smoke could be seen at a rear window of the three-story center-hallway apartment building.
Worried firefighters asked for additional units because this type of structure can house a large number of residents who could be cut off from exit routes if smoke fills up the hall, Hayes said.
But the fire was quickly put out and the first dog was rescued. But the second animal which had jumped before firefighters arrived was taken to Park View animal hospital for treatment.
The fire was contained to the one unit which had about $20,000 in damage.
