Los Angeles - A bake sale to benefit the family of a 15-year-old girl believed to have died from a drug overdose after she stopped breathing at last weekend's Electric Daisy Carnival continued Saturday.
The fundraiser, which started Friday at Alessandro Elementary School, 2210 Riverside Drive, was organized by members of the 1st Impression Drill/Dance/Cheer team, of which Sasha Rodriguez was a member.
Sasha, who lived in Atwater Village, died Tuesday at California Hospital Medical Center. She was taken to the hospital in respiratory arrest and never recovered, a hospital official said. A cause of death has not been established, pending the results of toxicology tests.
No one younger than 16 was supposed to be admitted.
Sasha's friends hoped to raise $1,000 for her family.
About 185,000 people attended the two-day music festival at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics handled 226 calls for medical emergencies and took 114 people to hospitals. Drug overdoses and drunkenness were the primary reasons, authorities said.
Sasha's death and the other problems prompted the head of the Coliseum Commission to impose a temporary moratorium on rave-type events. The commission is set to meet July 16 to consider extending the moratorium.
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal to create a multi-agency task force to investigate health and safety issues stemming from rave events.
Video from the festival showed crowds of people storming over fences, trampling concession tents to get in without paying. Some attendees said ticket takers at the gates were not checking the ages of attendees.
