Los Angeles - An officer-involved shooting in South Los Angeles today prompted a police search for a suspect and the lockdown of an elementary school.
An officer radioed for help and reported shots fired just before 10 a.m. in the 800 block of West 53rd St., and police flooded the area in search of a suspect who may have been carrying a Glock pistol.
Los Angeles police officer Sara Faden said no officers were injured, but it was unclear if the suspect -- described only as a male -- was injured. It was unclear what led to the gunfire.
Students at 52nd Street Elementary School, near Hoover Street, were being held in their classrooms as police swarmed the area, according to Monica Carazo of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The search and the lockdown were continuing early this afternoon.
Police closed some streets around the scene of the shooting while the search continued.
