Hemet - One of three people suspected in the shooting death of a
17-year-old boy, whose body was incinerated in a backyard bonfire
has been located, police said today.
Rene Lopez-Fregozo, 21, of Texas, was found late Friday
afternoon hours in a home on the 25000 block of Highway 74 in the
Perris area, according to Hemet Police Captain Tony Margis.
Lopez-Fregoso was taken to the Hemet Police Station and was
interviewed by detectives for several hours, Margis said. Based on
that interview and the results of the search, detectives released
him pending further investigation.
Two other suspects are still being sought today for the Nov.
15 death of Adrian Rios at rented home at 1440 Bluejay Way: Jose
Campos, 17, the suspected gunman; and his girlfriend, Felicia
Sharp, 17.
"We do believe that he was murdered and he was murdered prior
to being placed in the fire pit and burned," Hemet police Chief
Richard Dana said. "We do not believe that any other human remains
were found at the site."
Neighbors recalled a powerful stench emanating from the Nov.
15 bonfire.
Campos' parents -- Jose Juan Seym, 29, and Maria Alvarado
Seym, 45 -- were arrested and booked on suspicion of
felony accessory to murder in Murrieta. It was unclear why the
woman's bail was more than $1 million, while the man's was just
$5,000. Both are due in court Monday.
Sharp was initially reported missing along with Campos and
Rios in mid- November. She showed up with her mother
at Hemet police headquarters Nov. 25 after the human remains were
found.
She was questioned and released, but she hasn't been seen
since.
"Quite frankly, there wasn't enough evidence to hold her,"
Hemet police Capt. Tony Margis said.
Campos apparently lived at the home on Bluejay Way with the
Seyms, but neighbors said the home had been vacant about a week
before the night of the bonfire.
Investigators believe the teens gathered there to watch a
football game that Sunday.
Margis said authorities believe other people may have been
called to the home after the murder to help dispose of the body.
"We believe that there were six people in that house either
at the time of the murder or close thereafter," Margis said. "There
may be more. We're still working on identifying everybody who was
in that house throughout that time period."
The investigation began Nov. 16 when Rios' mother, Elodia
Lopez, went to find her son after being told he was last seen at
the home on Bluejay Way.
Lopez found a sneaker that resembled her son's shoe, and the
sneaker had "some sort of dried reddish" substance on it, according
to Margis.
Detectives found at least one shallow grave and the remains,
Margis said. They also found drag marks in the backyard.
Police who searched the home found a machete ,
a .22-caliber shell, a shovel, butcher-style knives, a gas
canister, burnt pieces of what looks like clothing, a partially
burned T-shirt; pieces of rope, a sock, a yellow metal hoop earring
and a Hemet Police Department ticket issued to Jose Campos,
according to court records.
