Fullerton - An 18-year-old Fullerton woman was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of stabbing her newborn daughter to death, police said, the second case of a young woman murdering a newborn within two weeks in Fullerton.
Yoselin Torres Tovar was arrested after being released from the hospital on Tuesday, Sgt. Andrew Goodrich said.
Tovar gave birth to the baby about 3 a.m. Sunday in her home on the west side of Fullerton, Sgt. Andrew Goodrich said.
Tovar had allegedly concealed the pregnancy and birth, but was taken to the hospital by her parents after the baby girl was born, Goodrich said.
After hospital workers reported the teen had suffered apost-birth blood loss, the infant's body was found hidden in Tovar's bedroom, Goodrich said.
The baby suffered "severe external and internal trauma," Goodrich said, adding Tovar delivered the child full-term. Investigators determined the baby suffered multiple stab wounds to her torso, Goodrich said.
Police suspect Tovar was trying to hide the pregnancy from her parents, Goodrich said. Officers had the teen under guard at a hospital until she was cleared by doctors to leave today, and was arrested then, Goodrich said.
Two weeks ago in Fullerton, Yanira Valderrama, 20, was charged with drowning her newborn son in a toilet and disposing of his body in a trash can Sept. 4, authorities said. Valderrama is expected to be arraigned April 30.
The deaths prompted Fullerton authorities to remind the public that unwanted newborn children can be given up within three days of birth at several locations throughout the city, including hospitals and all of Fullerton's fire stations, without repercussions.
