14 Occupy UCLA Protesters Arrested, Released

Published : Friday, 18 Nov 2011, 5:36 PM PST

Los Angeles - Police have arrested 14 "Occupy UCLA" protesters on campus, breaking up an encampment of 25 tents in Wilson Plaza.

University spokesman Steve Ritea says about 40 protesters left after police ordered the crowd to disperse at about 5:15 a.m. Friday. The arrests were completed by approximately 6 a.m.

In grainy videos posted to a Facebook page for "Occupy UCLA" early Friday morning, protesters sang and gave impassioned speeches to the surrounding police force about income disparity and financial barriers to higher education.

Of those arrested, 13 were UCLA students. They've been cited for failure to disperse and released.

Ritea says the protests follow repeated tuition increases in recent years, as the system has grown more reliant on tuition revenue than state funding to fund its academic mission.
