South Gate - Firefighters needed less than a half-hour to knock down a leaping, heaving pallet fire Monday night in an industrial yard in an unincorporated area just west of South Gate.

The fire was reported at 10:27 p.m. and spread quickly, throwing up flames of 30 feet or more at 90th and Juniper streets, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Frederic Stowers said.

About 35 firefighters responded and used at least four water cannons capable of shooting 1,000 gallons per minute each, according to Stowers. Fire crews called a knockdown at 10:53 p.m., Stowers said.

No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. Leaping flames at their highest appeared to reach close to power lines, which may have sustained some damage, but there were no outages reported, Stowers said.

Los Angeles County and city of Los Angeles firefighters were on the scene, Stowers said. Some of the water cannons used to douse the blaze were engine-based and others were on extensions, capable of reaching above the flames and shooting water down on them.

Arson investigators were on the scene, trying to determine the cause of the fire, Stowers said.
