Downey - There was an unusual CHP pursuit on the 5 Freeway in the Downey area on Labor Day morning -- police had to hold traffic at bay as two dogs sprinted down the side of the highway.
The two canines -- one white, one black -- apparently wandered onto the shoulder of the Santa Ana Freeway near the 605 Freeway interchange, and started booking down the roadway.
A pair of California Highway Patrol cars held up traffic -- of which there was little on Labor Day, fortunately -- and followed the dogs for at least a mile or two.
The dogs eventually got off the freeway and took to surface streets.
Police did get in touch with Animal Control to try and catch the dogs, but the pups disappeared into a residential neighborhood and officers lost sight of them -- as did we, unfortunately.
The good news is... traffic was pretty light on the holiday and the pair didn't seem to have any problems crossing what would normally be busy streets. We're keeping our fingers crossed for them!
