Los Angeles - Understanding earthquakes is difficult even for the most dedicated. You not only need to wait for a quake to happen, but the quake needs to be in the magnitude 5-6 range.
Scientists already know that the Chilean earthquake pushed Chile 10 feet into the ocean. At Caltech they're even presenting accurate maps of the cracks in Chile's crust.
The 8.8 Chilean tremor offered scientists their first whack at seeing how fast new satellite and GPS detection can work in a major quake. Jeff Michael has more in this video report.
