Loa Angeles - Over 100 million smartphones track their owners' every move thanks to software that comes preinstalled on phones from most major carriers, according to an Android developer.
During a security demonstration, Trevor Eckhart showed how software developed by Carrier IQ tracks virtually everything a user does... including logging every keystroke and button press on the phone.
Carrier IQ says that it helps its customers improve quality and performance "by counting and measuring operational information in mobile devices."
Some security experts are calling it spyware or a rootkit.
Carrier IQ's software, which was developed as a mobile analytics platform, can be found on most Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones.
Apple Inc. stopped supporting Carrier IQ's software with iOS 5.
A statement on the company's website says its software does not track customers or record keystrokes. That's a claim that Eckhart's video (see below) seems to refute.
AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile told FOX 11 News that they're not spying, but collecting information to improve service.
Meantime, U.S. Senator Al Franken is now calling on Carrier IQ to respond to Eckhart's claims.
