Pasadena - The Caltech men's basketball team on Tuesday night won its first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game since 1985, defeating Occidental, 46-45, at Caltech, ending a 310-game losing streak in conference play.
Ryan Elmquist broke a tie by making a free throw with three seconds left. The Tigers missed a desperation shot as time expired.
Elmquist scored a game-high 23 points, including making 15 of 19 free throws for the Beavers (5-20, 1-13 in conference play).
Caltech's last victory in conference play was on Jan. 23, 1985, a 48-47 triumph over La Verne.
Kris Montoya led Occidental (12-13, 6-8) with 15 points. Ty Cobb, the namesake great- grandson of the Baseball Hall of Fame member, scored four points in 24 minutes off the bench for the Tigers.
