Hollywood Hills - NHL player Sean Avery was placed behind bars today after he shoved an LAPD officer who tried to break up a party at his Hollywood Hills home, police said.

A neighbor complained about the noise coming from Avery's home and when police arrived about 1 a.m., Avery answered the front door, shoved an officer and slammed the door, said Lt. Jorge Pardo of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Station. The residence is in the 8000 block of Highland Terrace, police said.

The officer was not injured. When officers knocked again, Avery opened the door and cooperated, Pardo said.

Avery was booked at the Hollywood Station on suspicion of misdemeanor battery on a peace officer and was released shortly after 8 a.m. on $20,000 bail. A court appearance was scheduled for Sept. 2 in downtown Los Angeles, the sheriff's department reported.

The 31-year-old Canadian-born Avery plays for the New York Rangers and formerly skated for the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars.

His arrest was first reported by the celebrity news website TMZ.com.
