Hacienda Heights - We're partnering with the Make A Wish Foundation to make this a special holiday season for some kids who could use some joy.
First up... we want to introduce you to the 2009 Make A Wish Season of Wishes ambassador, 14-year-old Rachael Gottes.
Eighth graders in physical education at St Mark's Lutheran in Hacienda Heights are quite the lively bunch... especially Rachael, who spent most of sixth grade in the hospital battling leukemia.
Rachael Gottes, Make A Wish Ambassador:
"They actually sent out teachers every day from the school after school hours. I had classes every day, and I actually kept up with the classes despite my being in the hospital."
Stacey Gottes, Mother:
"They worked all through that year, including through the summer. They never asked me for a dime. They were there with books and gifts and presents from the kids."
The school prides itself on its faith-based service ideals and treating every student like family.
Rachael Gottes, Make A Wish Ambassador:
"You feel so different and isolated. When someone makes you feel normal it makes you feel on top of the world."
So it's no surprise that when the Make A Wish Foundation asked Rachael what she wanted, she decided to give back. With a little help from FOX 11 cameras to do a public service announcement, she's now the ambassador for this year's campaign.
Rachael Gottes, Make A Wish Ambassador:
"The PSA was loads of fun. We did hair and makeup... and we went to the news studio and we filmed it. It was cool."
Rachael Gottes, Make A Wish Ambassador:
"I just want people to know what a difference Make A Wish really makes in the lives of children."
Celebrate the holiday season with the Season of Wishes campaign.
The campaign will feature high-profile events, family activities, celebrity appearances and, most importantly, the granting of children's wishes.
Help grant more wishes and make this season a joyful time for the courageous wish kids! You can find out how to do that at www.seasonofwishes.org .
