Mudslides Cause Havoc in SoCal Storms

Sierra Madre - Firefighters are plowing through a mess of mud that slipped down a wet hillside in the eastern San Fernando Valley. It was at least the third mudslide reported Friday in Southern California.

Los Angeles City Fire spokesman Ron Myers says about 3 feet of mud covered the roadway in the Sylmar neighborhood Friday night, but no homes were damaged.

Myers says the mudslide occurred downhill from where a wildfire scorched the foothills in November. Debris traveled down a canyon and into the street.

Heavy rain drenched the fire-scorched hillsides all day, prompting mudslide concerns across the region.

Earlier Friday, a smaller mudslide sent debris into a basin three blocks away. In Sierra Madre east of Los Angeles, crews cleared mud that flowed from the San Gabriel Mountains.

Two streets were closed and one home was evacuated.
