Some FBI Agents Not Happy with J. Edgar Hoover Movie

(EndPlay Staff Reports) - A new biopic about J. Edgar Hoover is being discredited by former FBI agents who insist the famed FBI director wasn't gay.

"J. Edgar," directed by Clint Eastwood, is based on a screenplay by Dustin Lance Black. The movie implies that Hoover had a long-term relationship with his aide Clyde Tolson.

The Washington Post reported that since the release of the movie in November there have been hundreds of agents complaining about it on a closed e-mail list for FBI retirees.

Gregg Schwarz, a recently retired agent, broadcast his gripes publicly on YouTube as he said people interviewed for the screenplay were told there was no evidence of any homosexual relationship. Schwarz also said the movie missed many of Hoover's positive attributes such as how he was a 33rd degree Mason who raised money for burnt and physically disabled children.

"Mr. Hoover is portrayed in this movie as a tyrannical monster," said Schwarz, who said that was not true.

He said that during the time Hoover ran the bureau anyone who was gay was considered a security risk, making it unlikely Hoover himself was a homosexual.

The Post reported that Schwarz, who joined the agency in 1972, the year Hoover died, paid a videographer to film him in front of Hoover's grave in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

He urged people not to watch the movie.

"I hope you don't go see it because it doesn't really have any entertainment value whatsoever. It's a smear campaign," he said.

Towards the end of the nearly eight-minute video, Schwarz turns his focus to Eastwood, the actor turned director known for his tough lawman character "Dirty Harry."

"I will give you credit for one thing," Schwarz said. "You moved from "Dirty Harry" to Filthy Harry in just two hours."
