Ryan Reynolds Gave Denzel Washington Black Eye

(New York Post) - Ryan Reynolds gave Denzel Washington his first real black eye while filming their action movie "Safe House" in South Africa.

"I've never had a black eye in my life!" Washington revealed to People magazine. "There's a scene where I reach over to try to choke him while I have handcuffs on. We were flying around in the car. It just happened that as I was reaching forward he was flying back ... and pow."

Apparently, Reynolds' first instinct upon making contact with Washington's face was to blush.

"It was weird to feel my face on fire," Reynolds said.

Reynolds seemed sorry for injuring his co-star in the film, about a young CIA agent tasked with watching a fugitive in a safe house. But he also sounded a bit proud, too.

"I'm glad I was your first," Reynolds joked to Washington. "If it had to be anyone, it was an apologetic Canadian."

Reynolds added the incident could be a highlight of his career.

"That was my early retirement," he said. "I've given Denzel Washington a black eye and I should probably go home."

"Safe House" opens in the US on Feb. 10, the UK on Feb. 24 and Australia on Feb. 9.
