(NewsCore) - Tom Cruise has confirmed that he is considering a possible sequel to "Top Gun," 25 years after he played Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the landmark action film.
The Hollywood heavyweight is out promoting his fourth "Mission Impossible" film -- "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" this time around -- but confirmed in a recent interview that he is working with "Top Gun" director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on ideas for a second run at the iconic 1986 military drama.
"We're working on it," Cruise told MTV News.
"I hope we can figure this out to go do it again," he added. "If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun.'"
Reports emerged earlier this year that Paramount Pictures was in discussions to revive the 80's cult classic with avid aviator David Ellison, son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, overseeing financing for the film.
In the meantime, "Top Gun" fanatics can head to the theaters in early 2012 to view a 3D version of the original film.
"'Top Gun' lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight," said Rob Hummel, CEO of Legend 3D which converted the film to 3D.
Legend 3D is funding the conversion and sharing the profits from the re-release with Paramount Pictures, the film's distributor.
