(MYFOX NATIONAL) - A fight between two sisters in Michigan ended with one of them biting off a third of the other’s nose, reports the Jackson Citizen Patriot.
Bobbie Smith, 27, and her sister 28-year-old Sandra Smith were fighting on Sunday night when the attack occurred. Police Chief Michael Curry said it was unclear what started the argument.
The Associated Press reports Bobbie Smith was charged with domestic violence and mayhem and is being held on a $5,000 bond.
A 1931 Michigan law partially defines mayhem as mutilating another person’s nose. It’s considered a 10-year felony. Jackson County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Mark Blumer said it’s an unusual crime that he has only charged a few times in his career.
In addition to the domestic violence and mayhem charges, 27-year-old Smith also has been charged with resisting or obstructing an officer and malicious destruction of police property. She had no visible injuries when arrested, but kicked an officer and caused damage to a patrol car. Her defense lawyer, David Lady, said both sisters were highly intoxicated that night.
After the attack, Sandra Smith was taken to the hospital and is reportedly meeting with a plastic surgeon. Police were able to recover the severed part of the nose, but it is unclear if it will be able to be reattached.
The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported that when Bobbie Smith appeared in court Tuesday she said, “I am really sorry for what I did. I love my sister.” She told the judge that Sandra Smith hit her first.
