Britain Should Brace For Pest Invasion

(NewsCore) - Britain faces an invasion of lorikeets, electric ants and super wasps, The Sun reported Saturday.

The species, which entered the U.K. in recent years, were taking hold in homes and gardens. Lorikeets, called parakeets in Britain, nest in roofs and can damage supporting beams, piping and insulation. Up to 45,000 are thought to live in Britain.

Some historians say flocks date back to birds released from the set of "The African Queen" movie in London in 1951.

The ants were first seen in Gloucestershire, western England, last year. Meanwhile, the super wasps -- twice the size of normal ones -- nest in hedges and shrubs and can be a risk to children.

Paul Bates, of pest control firm Cleankill, warned of the new threats and said his company was bracing for an influx of business related to the new critters.

"We expect a rise in calls," Bates said.
