(NewsCore) - A scale model of a US fighter jet weighing hundreds of pounds was stolen from a museum at an airbase in the Netherlands, the museum announced Monday.

The scale model of an F-104 Starfighter jet was discovered missing Sunday morning from Deelen airbase, eastern Holland, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported.

The museum's management say the theft is a mystery and do not know how the thieves could have taken the model, which is half the size of a real fighter jet, out of the museum undetected.

They believe pranksters may be responsible, after a mocking note was found at the scene.

The museum has launched a Twitter campaign to try and find the culprits, the newspaper reported.

Lockheed's F-104 Starfighter was operational from 1958 until 1975, including during the Vietnam War.
