(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - State fairs are known for their rich variety of cuisine. According to a press release , this year's California State Fair will include deep-fried alligator and crickets and chocolate-covered bacon.
The Sacramento Bee reports that choices also include deep fried scorpions covered in chocolate and grilled python kebabs.
"Python tastes like chicken – make that very, very chewy chicken," wrote Chris Macias for the Bee. "But the seasoning was good enough, with a mix of lemon pepper, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, and Old Bay seasoning mix."
Macias wrote that the alligator's texture was less chewy but that the alligator "had a slightly swampy aftertaste."
He complimented the chocolate-covered bacon, saying the bacon flavor gets more pronounced the more someone has, even though it ends up more chocolate than bacon.
There are also deep-fried Twinkies and Moon Pies.
The 2010 California State Fair opened this week and runs through August 1 at Cal Expo in Sacramento.
