Parents Often Dread College Sendoff More

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Some experts and parents say the difficult task of letting go as their children go off to college is getting even harder.

Marshall Duke is a psychology professor at Emory University in Atlanta.

For one, he says parents are more connected than ever, whether its through social networking or texting.

Duke also says the expense of college makes parents think they have "license to intervene as they would in other investments."

Some parents ignore barricades intended to keep them from trying to register for classes for their children. Others crash student-only orientation events.

Duke wants parents to let their children figure things out for themselves and become adults.

The message from universities and colleges is the same: Parents, please go home.

The parents of Ariana Kramer, who is starting at the University of Iowa, say they get the message and while they worry, they say their daughter will cope.
