Tax Day, normally on April 15, was moved this year because of Emancipation Day, which is celebrated in Washington, D.C. The holiday generally falls on April 16, but because that date fells on a Saturday this year, it was observed on April 15.
The U.S. tax code states that tax deadlines can't fall on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays, according to CNN Money .
The holiday marks the day President Abraham Lincoln signed an act freeing about 3,000 slaves in the District of Columbia, a year after the Civil War began. The tax due date has not been extended because of Emancipation Day since 2007.
Also different this year is the extension filing deadline. Huffington Post reported that the normal extension of Oct. 15 has been changed to Oct. 17 this year because the 15th falls on a Saturday.
