LeBron James Dons Full Pads at High School Football Practice

(NewsCore) - Two-time NBA MVP LeBron James found a new outlet to kill time during the NBA lockout by suiting up with his former high school's varsity football team.

James took to the practice field at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School (SVSM) in Akron, Ohio, donning full pads and the jersey of the team's tallest player, who was unable to participate due to an injury, WJW-TV reported Wednesday.

James, who led the Fighting Irish basketball team to three state titles during his high school days, joined the third-ranked Division III football team for about an hour Tuesday, lining up at wide receiver.

"I'm not gonna lie, it was pretty cool to see him out there," said SVSM starting quarterback Kevin Besser.

The six-foot-eight, 250-pound NBA forward ran routes and caught passes, but tackling the basketball superstar apparently was off limits.

"Our defensive backs were allowed to jam him at the line of scrimmage," said running back Sae'Von Fitzgerald. "But he took no contact after that. Coach [Dan Borman] said we shouldn't tackle him."

James, who had some success playing wide receiver for SVSM, showed he still had the skills to make plays on the field.

"He caught everything, he didn't drop a pass," Besser said. "I probably threw six or seven passes his way and he went up and got everything."

The brief workout appeared to get the seven-time NBA All-Star thinking about life without basketball.

"Just got done practicing with the St.V Varsity football team, full pads and all. Felt great being back on the field. Should I?" James wrote tweeted Tuesday evening.
