Chicago Cubs Draft Son of Hockey Legend Wayne Gretzky

(NewsCore) - A baseball career beckons for the son of ice hockey's all-time leading scorer, Wayne Gretzky, after he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs Tuesday.

Trevor Gretzky, a senior at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, Calif., was selected with the 219th pick in the MLB Draft.

The younger Gretzky announced his intention last October to play college baseball at San Diego State University where he will be coached by Hall of Famer and former Padres' slugger Tony Gwynn.

As a junior, Gretzky batted .341 with two home runs and 33 RBIs.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound first baseman told MLB.com in February he fell in love with baseball while his dad was tearing up the ice with the New York Rangers.

"I was introduced to it, probably, in New York," Gretzky told MLB.com. "Growing up, my dad was with the Rangers and I remember him taking me to a Yankee game and ever since then I've wanted to play. It's been my dream to play in the major leagues ever since then."

The budding baseball player's famous father discussed in February the prospect of his son being drafted by a MLB franchise.

"When you're going to be my son or the son of a professional athlete, the pressure is a little bit -- even greater for those kids," Gretzky said, according to NHL.com. "After the draft takes place and we find out where he's going to go and what situation he's in, then we'll sit down and talk about it as a family."

Trevor Gretzky has until August 15 to decide whether he will sign a professional contract with the Chicago ballclub or play at San Diego State.
