(NewsCore) - US authorities have seized more than 10,700 counterfeit NFL jerseys at airports in Los Angeles and Ontario since the season started last September, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said Thursday.
The seizures were worth $847,000, according to suggested retail prices for genuine jerseys, the border agency said in a statement.
"CBP officers and import specialists are highly specialized in product identification, detection and interception of trademark violators. Counterfeit sports apparel typically looks similar to brand name jerseys but are cheaper and of poorer quality," said Todd Owen, director of field operations for the CBP in Los Angeles.
CBP officers discovered 304 parcels at air cargo consignment locations at Los Angeles and Ontario international airports in a string of seizures between Sept. 8 and Wednesday this week.
The border agency did not report where the counterfeit jerseys had been sent from or if anyone had been charged over the seizures.
