(NewsCore) - San Francisco officials said Tuesday that a downed power line likely caused the first of two outages that disrupted Monday's game between the 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers at Candlestick Park, KGO-TV reported.
The first power outage delayed the kickoff by 20 minutes. The second loss of electricity -- which occurred on live television and caused a stoppage of 16 minutes in the second quarter -- reportedly was caused by an internal failure of equipment and could be connected to the first outage.
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee apologized to fans and the NFL for the bizarre blackouts. He said at a press conference Tuesday he was "embarrassed" by the incident, according to KGO-TV.
California utility PG&E and city power officials were working to confirm their preliminary findings, Lee added.
After Monday night's interruptions, the 49ers went on to beat the Steelers 20-3.
