(NewsCore) - Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson was fined $10,000 Wednesday for mimicking the shooting incident involving Jets wideout Plaxico Burress during a touchdown celebration, The Star-Ledger reported.
Johnson sparked controversy with his end zone display Sunday, in which he pretended to shoot himself in the leg after scoring a touchdown against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.
Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg outside a New York nightclub three years ago, leading to an illegal weapons charge that saw him spend 20 months behind bars.
After pretending to shoot himself, Johnson began running with his arms extended in a rip of the Jets' "Flight Boys" touchdown celebration, before crashing to the ground.
The touchdown had put the Bills up 14-7 with 2:09 to play in the second quarter. But Johnson's shenanigans led to a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty which was assessed on the ensuing kickoff, which the Bills botched, setting up a great field position for the Jets offense.
New York promptly leveled the score four plays later when quarterback Mark Sanchez found Burress for a 14-yard touchdown.
Johnson later dropped a wide open pass from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick as the Bills looked to mount a game-winning score with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock. The Jets went on to win 28-24.
Johnson later apologized for his actions, saying he regretted it.
"It was very stupid of me going through that and I feel like I cost our team the win by doing that," he said, according to The Star-Ledger.
"It was a bad decision ... at the end of the day, it cost our team seven points. I have to apologize to everyone and talk to [the] coach. I can't be doing that. I need to be mature about the situation."
Burress said Johnson's antics did not upset him.
"I've seen worse and I've heard worse," he said.
