Chiefs Fire Head Coach Todd Haley

(NewsCore) - The Kansas City Chiefs fired head coach Todd Haley Monday.

The announcement came on the heels of the Chiefs' 37-10 loss to the New York Jets Sunday, dropping the team's record to 5-8 on the season.

"This was a difficult decision but one that we feel is best for the future of the Chiefs," Kansas City's chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement. "Although there have been bright spots at different points this season, we have not made meaningful progress and we felt that it was necessary to make a change.

"We appreciate Todd's contributions during his time with the club, and we wish him well in the future."

Haley, who was in just his third season with the team, led the Chiefs to an AFC West division title in 2010. He amassed a 19-27 record during his brief tenure in Kansas City.

"Todd helped this team in many valuable ways over the past three seasons, and I am thankful for his contributions," Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said. "Unfortunately, we have not been able to establish the kind of consistency we need to continue to build a strong foundation for the future and we believe a change is important at this time."

The team announced it would hold a press conference later Monday to discuss the decision. FOX Sports reported defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is expected to take over the team for the remaining three games of the regular season. Crennel served as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2005-2008.

Haley, 44, began his NFL career as a scout for the Jets in 1995. He has since worked for the Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals, where he served as offensive coordinator under Ken Whisenhunt from 2007-2008, leading one of the league's most explosive offenses to Super Bowl XLIII in 2008-09.
