Alexis Wiley - "So what made you move from LA to Detroit?" It's the question people ask me all the time. First of all, if you talk to me for any length of time, you'll realize I am a true California girl at heart. I try to model my attitude after the sunshine and beaches I know so well.

I grew up just minutes from the Pacific Ocean and will always love it! But there was one thing stronger than my love of sun and sand: my love for news and good journalism; a craft to which I was so dedicated that I left sunny LA and headed to the windy city to attend Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

From there, I got my first job as an investigative reporter/ anchor in Shreveport, LA. It was there that I realized that journalism is capable of doing more than informing people, it can change their lives.

From that point on, I was hooked on doing stories that made a difference. While in Shreveport, one of my investigations exposing slumlords, led the city to adopt a renter's code creating a minimum standard of living for all rental properties.

My next stop was Columbus, Ohio. A city that's all about the Buckeyes! But considering that I am a die-hard Wildcat, I'll let you in on a secret. I have NEVER rooted for the Buckeyes (just don't tell Andrea Isom). In spite of my "dark secret", it was during my time in Columbus that I won my first Emmy for an investigation exposing millions of wasted tax dollars ( my family was so excited they forgot to take pictures!), plus my work also led lawmakers to launch their own investigation into why the state's crime victims fund was running out of money.

After 2 years in Columbus, i got a call from FOX 2. I was ecstatic! Why? Because Detroit is a city that the whole country is watching. It's a city that like so many others is facing tremendous challenges. But despite those challenges, the Detroit Metro area is filled with so many innovative, courageous and talented people who aren't afraid of the odds and are determined to restore this city. And I believe they'll be successful and I hope to be part of that process. Plus..I think the Detroit area's a lot of fun; plenty of great shopping and nightlife ( 2 of my favorite things).

I'm also really passionate about issues that affect people with special needs particularly autism. Growing up, I spent every summer working in my mother's summer camp and other programs for children with communication disorders.

I'm also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the National Association of Black Journalists.

While it sounds like I work all the time, I really don't (another well- kept secret). I love to travel and have the frequent flier miles to prove it, plus I love animals and have a cat whom I affectionately call "Kat Wiley". I could tell you so much more, but, bottomline, I am so glad to be here in Detroit and no amount of sunshine will be enough to make me leave.
