Having an alias paid off once already for a south side man on the run from the law. Now, FBI agents want your help to make sure Sergio Mendoza is captured.
He's charged with the shooting death of another Chicago man on the city's south side nearly five years ago. Investigators say Mendoza fatally shot then 24 year old Manny Gamboa in the 7100 block of south Lawndale. Police say Gamboa had just gotten into a car with three other friends and was headed for the lakefront to do a little fishing. While they were waiting for a fourth person to get in the car, a two toned blue color chevy astro van came down the street and stopped.
Investigators say that's when Mendoza and the driver got out of the van and began shooting. The FBI's Ross Rice says, "They were wearing white gloves and they were both armed with handguns. and they opened fire. There were atleast a dozen shots that were fired at the car." The shooting is believed to be gang related.
Agents say Gamboa died at the scene and Mendoza took off . They say he was arrested a few days later in Tennesse but under the alias, Isacc (sic) Avalos. Since there was no arrest warrant for a "Sergio Mendoza" police let him go. No one has seen him since.
Investigators are now hoping that since a few years have passed that either Mendoza has returned to the Chicago area or that he may be in contact with friends or family here. That means you may have either seen him or heard from him.
Here is a detailed description of what investigators say Mendoza looks like.
He is described as a
26 year old hispanic male,
about five feet ten inches tall,
weighing around 130 pounds,
with long dark hair and a light olive complexion.
He is considered armed an dangersous. If you see him, call police.
