The FOX 11 and My13 Community Relations Department offers free air time for Public Service Announcements (PSA's) to qualifying non-profit organizations that provide a service to the community in the areas of health, education, welfare, charity, culture and safety.
Organizations in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties are eligible, as well as state and national organizations.
We do not return submitted PSAs.
We require 6 to 8 weeks lead-time before your anticipated start date to put your PSAs into rotation. For example, if you have an event taking place on March 1st, we recommend that you send the spot no later than January 1st. This will allow one month for station handling and one month for use on air.
All PSA's submitted to us should be on BETACAM SP tape.
Only ONE tape is necessary for submission to both stations.
We accept :10, :15, :20, :30 and :60 second PSAs.
Each tape should include a 60 second color bar, followed by 15 seconds of visual identification (the slate), and 8 seconds of countdown. If more than one PSA is on a reel, a slate must precede each.
Please do not include more than 10 spots on one tape.
Your submission must list all cut numbers and lengths of each PSA on the tape box, and a brief description of each cut.
If there is a phone number or address in the PSA, write it on the tape box and include the name of the non-profit organization that appears in the spot.
INFORMATION TO INCLUDE
To qualify for consideration, include the following items with your PSA:
A brochure or fact sheet outlining your group's background and aims.
Proof of tax-exempt status: a copy of your 501(c)(3) letter or your Southern California Broadcaster's Association (SCBA) file number must be submitted. If you do not have a SCBA number, call (323) 938-3100 for information.
If your PSA includes a solicitation of funds or goods or if there is a charge for the event you are announcing, you must include a copy of your Los Angeles Social Services Information Card. You can obtain a Social Service Information Card by calling the Los Angeles Police Commission Charitable Services Section at (213) 978-1144.
If your fundraiser is taking place outside of the City of Los Angeles, you must send a copy of your local fundraising permit.
If you are soliciting funds or goods from people both outside the City of Los Angeles and from within the City of Los Angeles, you will need to include a Los Angeles Social Service Card as well as your local fundraising permit.
Attach your business card to the tape box.
Include a script for each spot with the tape.
STEPS TO SUCCESS
All videotape spots should be submitted on BETACAM SP tape. They must be broadcast quality and in sharp focus.
Submit completed spots only.
Localize your spots. If your organization has a local hotline or a local address, use that local number in place of national tag.
Avoid FLASHERS. A Flasher is a phone number or address that flashes across the screen faster than the hand can write. Experience has shown that 8 to 10 seconds on the screen with verbal reinforcement is what it takes to get the message across.
Time your spots. We accept :10, :15, :20, :30 and :60 second PSA's. If your PSA is too short or too long, we cannot use it.
When scripting your PSA, the copy should always be two seconds less than the video. For example, a :60 second spot has :58 seconds of copy. The verbal pitch begins one second into the PSA and ends no later than :59 seconds into the spot. The total video on the spot remains at :60 seconds, as will any background music or sound effects.
Do not go to "black" in a PSA. When a spot goes to black on the air, our Engineering Department could mistake it for a computer error and punch up the next spot.
Since both sides of a controversial issue cannot be presented in a PSA format, they cannot be considered as subject matter for a PSA. Controversial issues are handled in our Public Affairs programming and in the news.
Tag your spots visually with the name of the legal nonprofit organization sponsoring the PSA. Avoid multiple tags.
You don't need a celebrity to get your message across. All you need is a good spot. If you are considering using a politician, make sure he or she is not running for office.
FOX 11 and My13 always have a need for children's PSAs. If you can create a quality spot aimed at children ages 2-12, you will increase your chances of getting on the air.
Spots including logos or representation of for-profit companies may not be considered for Public Service Announcement time.
