Kilpatrick Gets Break In Campaign Funds Ruling

Posted:

DETROIT (AP) -- A state hearing officer has ruled that Michigan law allowed ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to use campaign funds to fight an obstruction of justice charge in 2008.

Fox 2 spoke with Kilpatrick attorney Jim Thomas on today's decision and tapped into the legal expertise of Charlie Langton for some added perspective.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Friday's written opinion says nearly all of the $976,000 Kilpatrick paid in legal fees was proper because the charges were related to his mayor's job.

The Free Press and The Detroit News also report that $10,000 in campaign money should not have been used to defend him from an assault charge not related to his role as mayor. Kilpatrick owes the $10,000 fine and a $1,000 penalty.

Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to obstruction tied to a text-messaging sex scandal and no contest to assault in a separate case. He resigned in 2008 and later served jail time.
