There are new developments in a deadly shooting in Royal Oak. We now have the name of the victim, and it's a familiar name for FOX 2's Rob Wolchek. More than a decade ago, Rob put Gary Lupiloff in the Hall of Shame. Now, police are working to find his killer.
It was 1999 and Rob Wolchek was hot on the trial of Gary Lupiloff. At the time, Lupiloff was a car broker accused of ripping off customers, and Wolchek's investigation revealed a long pattern of criminal behavior.
"In 1992, he was convicted of ripping off banks. After a year in jail, he was back dealing cars. He's been named in lawsuits for changing odometers," Wolchek said in his report at the time.
"This guy engaged in theft. He stole his client's money," the state Bar Association also told us back then. Lupiloff was once an attorney, but he lost his law license for stealing clients' money. He even served time in federal prison, and now Lupiloff's been murdered. He was gunned down Tuesday around 3:00 p.m. in his own driveway on Ardmore in Royal Oak.
"He was a brilliant guy, very charming, but he was a crook," said Wolchek.
The divorced father of two changed his name and started a marketing company, but Wolchek says he did not appear to change his ways.
"He was Gary Lupiloff. I did the story on him. He went to prison. He came out of prison and he was all of a sudden Gary Harmon," Wolchek said. "Every year for the last ten years I've been getting calls on Gary Harmon, a.k.a. Gary Lupiloff from various people saying this guy ripped me off. Did you put him in the Hall of Shame, and yes I did."
Right now, this shooting is a bit of a mystery. Police are looking for witnesses, including someone seen riding a mountain bike in the area around the time of the shooting. That person may have been carrying some sort of case.
So far, police tell us there are no suspects and no murder weapon has been recovered. Anyone with information on the shooting should call Royal Oak Police.
