Mr. Speaker, speech shouldn't be stifled for expressing one’s mind

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Vagina.

There, I said it.

Vagina. Awfully medical sounding, isn't it?

My five-year-old calls it a vee gee.

Maybe if state Rep. Lisa Brown (D-West Bloomfield) had said it that way on the legislative floor she wouldn't have been stifled by the house speaker.

Vee gee. It's cuter.

Rep. Brown was opposing abortion legislation on Wednesday that would make Michigan one of America's most restrictive states for the procedure.

At the end of her speech, Rep. Brown let 'er rip: "Finally Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you are all so interested in my vagina, but no means no."

On Thurday, she was informed that she had been censured and was not allowed to speak, on the grounds of bad language and poor manners.

She should have said vee gee.

However you feel about the abortion issue, I don't know anybody who backs the speaker's decision to take away Rep. Brown's right to speak. This isn't about abortion. It's about the right to express one's mind.

If House Speaker Jase Bolger (R-Marshall) can't handle the rough-and-tumble language of modern politics, he ought to try another line of work. Perhaps as an instructor at a debutante finishing school.

Here is yet another example of our politicians wasting time, embarrassing themselves and conjuring up divisive issues while Rome burns.

How about the roads, Mr. Speaker? Home foreclosures? Public schools? They're a mess and that's what we sent representatives to Lansing to fix.

My five-year-old will go to Catholic school next year because the public schools are in disarray.

Catholic school. Not exactly a citadel of the pro-choice movement, but a better place, I believe, to prepare her for the grownup world.

When my daughter becomes a woman, if a man treats her like Rep. Bolger treated Rep. Brown, I will expect my daughter to take that man aside and tell him to kiss her a--.

Super Bowl XLVIII is in New York.  Well, not exactly.  The Super Bowl's host city is actually East Rutherford, N.J.  Sometimes it's hard to get respect in America if you're not from places like NYC or LA.
