It's no secret that California is facing a $16 billion budget deficit, and Governor Brown's faulty income estimates revealed him to be somewhat oblivious to the dire state of our fiscal finances. Now, he appears to be biting the bullet by saying he's going to cut 11,000 jobs and transition public employees to a four-day work week.

On paper, it looks like he's starting to take baby steps to deal with the public worker unions.
But the reality is he's actually trying to move the privatized jobs to the public sector.  Under Governor Brown's new proposal, jobs such as custodial, food and security that have been privatized in the past will now become state jobs.

Over the years, privatization has saved California taxpayers billions of dollars and kept workers from being added to the state's overly generous pension and benefit systems. Brown is so beholden to the unions that while the headlines suggest he's making hard cuts—by the way, those cuts may not even happen—the truth is he's squeezing out private contractors to make room for more union jobs.

How does that help our fiscal crisis? In effect, we're looking at another Brown shell game. He should take a cue from Governor Walker of Wisconsin. Walker not only took on the unions when his state was facing a multi-billion dollar deficit, but his reforms will have resulted in a 154 million dollar surplus by summer of 2013. Look, the people of California are getting wise. They took on the unions in San Diego and San Jose by recently voting to cut city employee pensions.

So Governor Brown, do what's right for your state and stand up to the unions. Withdraw your latest proposal to curtail privatization and focus on making real cuts.
