This week's Wednesday's Child story features a sibling set of 5 children – Alejandro (2000), Natalie (2001), Raylene (2003), Brianna (2004) and Elijah (2007). Unfortunately youngest sibling Elijah (seen with the others in upper left picture) was not able to make it for the segment shoot as we met up with his siblings at Chuck E. Cheese in Covina, California to
show how well these kids play together and how important it is that they grow up together.
Alejandro, aka Alex, is the oldest and has some more specific special needs. He has been
diagnosed with Williams Syndrome and moderate Mental Retardation. Alex also has moderate hearing loss in both ears for which he uses hearing aids -- but that doesn't stop him from
engaging and talking! He likes to socialize with his peers and enjoys playing games such as basketball. Alex also enjoys spending time with his siblings and often takes lessons from them on how to handle situations.
Natalie, in many ways, assumes the role of oldest sibling and displays a somewhat maternal sense of responsibility towards he siblings. She's doing well at school and achieving at grade level and tells us that it's very important to her to be adopted with her siblings. With her youngest sibling Elijah absent from the taping, Natalie includes him in her own way by telling us about how he can be a lot of fun (even when he's a handful) and about his funny personality.
Raylene also takes on some responsibility for showing Alex how to do things and/or looking after Elijah, but she and youngest sister Brianna often are the two siblings that have the most fun together, enjoying much of the same music and television together. And when given the opportunity, all three sisters are like "BFFs" who can chat away the hours and often seem to have an inside joke about most topics.
Helping find a way for these five to grow up together is a high priority for us!
